Zusammenfassung

Das einflussreiche geschichtswissenschaftliche Werk erschien erstmals 1843. Prescott, eigentlich ein Experte für spanische Literatur, debütierte als Historiker mit der 1837 veröffentlichten History of the Reign of Ferdinand and Isabella the Catholic (Geschichte der Regierung Ferdinands und Isabellas der Katholischen von Spanien, 1842). Wie dieses Werk entstand auch seine History of the Conquest of Mexico unter bemerkenswerten Umständen: Von Jugend an nahezu blind, musste sich Prescott sein umfangreiches Quellenmaterial vorlesen lassen. Obwohl es ihm nicht möglich war, Bibliotheken persönlich aufzusuchen, konnte er dank der Bereitwilligkeit spanischer und mexikanischer Archive, ihm die gewünschten Dokumente zu kopieren, auch von den damals verfügbaren unveröffentlichten Zeugnissen ausgiebig Gebrauch machen.
