Zusammenfassung
Metamorphose bedeutet wörtlich »über die Form hinaus «, was auf das Griechische metá (»nach«, »über«) und morphé (»Form«) zurückgeht. Die Eröffnung der Metamorphosen (in nova fert animus mutatas dicere formas / corpora – »Singen heißt mich das Herz von Gestalten, verwandelt in neue Leiber«), kann als der Versuch Ovids angesehen werden, den Titel des Werkes in lateinischer Sprache auszuführen (Barchiesi 2005, cxxvii). Das technische Verb der Metamorphose, mutare, das sich auf formae bezieht, sowie das Adjektiv nova, das corpora begleitet, unterstreichen das Moment der Veränderung und der Trennung, das jeder Metamorphose innewohnt. Das eigentliche Prädikat des Verses ist jedoch nicht muto, sondern fero.
