Hofmannsthals letzte abgeschlossene Komödie greift mit ihrem Titel auf eine historisch belegte Bezeichnung Robespierres zurück. Hofmannsthal war ihm als Bühnenfigur in Georg Büchners Drama Dantons Tod begegnet, das er in der von Karl Emil Franzos besorgten Ausgabe von 1880 kennengelernt hatte.
