Zusammenfassung

Klopstocks bereits früh einsetzende Begeisterung für englischsprachige, religiös inspirierte Autoren wie John Milton, Samuel Richardson, Elizabeth Singer-Rowe und nicht zuletzt Edward Young ist ausgesprochen hoch und prägt seine Vorstellung von empfindsamer Literatur maßgeblich. Herausragende Bedeutung nimmt für Klopstock Edward Youngs (1683–1765) Langgedicht The Complaint: or, Night-Thoughts on Life, Death and Immortality (1742–1745) ein, das unter dem Titel Night-Thoughts oder Nachtgedanken bekannt wurde. Der im englischen Welwyn lebende Young hatte zunächst in Oxford Recht studiert und fortan versucht, sich mit Gedichten, Dramen und Satiren einen Namen als Autor zu machen.
