Abstract

In this chapter we discuss the etiology of neck pain and its differential diagnoses. Neck pain has an annual prevalence of over 30% and presents in either an acute, sub-acute or chronic fashion. The pain can be somatic or neuropathic and could be caused by degenerative spinal changes, nerve root compression or a more ominous underlying pathology. There are significant personal and socioeconomic burdens with neck pain, making it the fourth leading cause of disability.
