Stages of Denial: State-Funded Theatres in Serbia and the Yugoslav Wars

Theatre in the Context of the Yugoslav Wars

Abstract

Šentevska discusses the position of institutional theatres in Serbia in a situation of extreme social crisis during the wars in former Yugoslavia. The article opens with an overview of the most acute manifestations of this social crisis. Subsequently, it discusses specific issues: the crisis of national identity and its reflections in theatre; the role of classics in the theatre repertoire; reflections on war-related subjects and ethical issues; the issue of “realism” and representations of the ongoing social reality in theatre. In the concluding part of the article, the author discusses the ambivalent role of the theatre as “social anesthetic” and “collective conscience,” with the prevailing task of embedding a sense of normality in a social climate of permanent crisis.
