Abstract
Herein, the concept of social entrepreneurship is introduced and characterized through a discussion of its origins and various definitions. Its pivotal characteristics are depicted, including the role of innovations, entrepreneurial spirit, and specific personality traits. Also discussed are various research results, which posit that social entrepreneurs build social capital while pursuing their novel ideas. This social capital ensures the indigenous character of the instigated social change process.
This entry provides examples of social entrepreneurship from various countries and continents that address diverse and pressing social problems. It also introduces global institutions promoting social entrepreneurship. Finally, it suggests further research that would be beneficial in this field.
