The Possible in Management

The Palgrave Encyclopedia of the Possible

Abstract

This entry explores the transformative power of the “possible” in the field of business and management by using digital transformation as an overarching framework. Given the rapid advancement of technology and its impact on business innovations, including both internal processes at all levels of operation and external processes enabling business transactions with customers and partners, digitalization elements are drivers of change and cannot be left out of any considerations of future potential or possibilities. This entry examines how digitalization is changing organizational structures and how agile management methods are used to manage innovation. It provides an overview of business models which are possible within digital business environments, including digital marketplaces and platforms, as well as models that can be used in open innovation. Finally, the entry identifies contradictory tensions inherent to innovation processes in digital transformation and how the management of paradoxes enables organizations to create their own possible futures.
