Abstract
Acute appendicitis is one of the most common abdominal emergencies requiring surgical intervention that is seen in the emergency department. Computerized tomography (CT) with oral and intravenous contrast has the highest sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis. However, risks from radiation and contrast with CT must be considered. We review the Alvarado score and ultrasound as potential means for avoiding CT.
