Comprehensive Cardiovascular Medicine in the Primary Care Setting

Part of the book series: Contemporary Cardiology ((CONCARD))

Abstract

Weight gain and obesity are becoming the most significant chronic public health conditions of our generation, impacting the well-being, productivity, longevity, and economics of our society. Over two-thirds of US adults are overweight or obese, leading to an increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, cardiovascular disease, and some types of cancer. The etiology of obesity is multifactorial, brought about by an interaction between predisposing genetic and metabolic factors and a rapidly changing environment, one that favors excessive caloric intake while at the same time reducing opportunities to engage in a physically active lifestyle. Assessment of obesity should be performed in the primary care setting. Treatment includes lifestyle management and consideration of pharmacotherapy and bariatric surgery depending upon the severity of obesity and associated comorbid conditions.
