Abstract

This chapter lays out the fundamental principles of usability, user experience (UX), and human-centered design (HCD), with an emphasis on understanding the phases of product and service development. Illustrated by real-world case examples, the chapter outlines basic industry concepts and terminology, describes common human-centered design practices, and provides information about educational resources and training organizations. Discussions include the benefits of human-centered design, current and emerging human-centered design trends, and the tactical, practical value of these techniques for improving product and service design outcomes for healthcare consumers, patients, and providers.
