Abstract
In this chapter, we discuss issues surrounding perioperative pain management. It involves everything from preoperative pain, to intraoperative pain, to postoperative pain. We discuss the subjective evaluation of pain in a variety of situations, and informed consent, as it relates to pain management. We discuss various strategies for management of intraoperative pain, including multimodal pain management techniques, regional anesthesia, and a variety of pharmaceutical modalities for controlling the pain response during an anesthetic. Finally, we discuss the management of postoperative pain, including opioid, non-opioid, and multimodal approaches to controlling patients’ pain.
