Abstract
This chapter has been written to introduce primarily mental health counselors to the worldview and experiences of Chilean Americans and persons of Chilean heritage living in the United States. Though one of the smallest, but most integrated Latinx groups in the United States, they may still experience marginalization if they are not White, speak English well, and have social and economic capital. The chapter begins with the geographical and historical background of Chile and continues with a description of the four waves of Chilean immigration to the United States, including the author’s own immigration story. Though research is scant on Chilean Americans, the author has interviewed and surveyed Chileans to understand the prevailing worldview they hold in the United States and their orientation towards upward social mobility and self-identifying as White. The chapter concludes with suggestions for counselors when counseling Chilean Americans.
