Creativity and ICT: Theoretical Approaches and Perspectives in School Education

Abstract

This paper explores the link between creativity and ICT tools in school education. This link is mainly approached through (a) the discussion of theoretical approaches and empirical data regarding the potential of ICT to support creativity (digital technologies exhibit features that enable learners to be creative) and (b) the identification of the essential role of teachers in supporting the development of creativity. Besides, a small-scale study was conducted with a sample of 156 high school students aged 14–15 years old. Most students reported that ICT have helped (rather than prevented) their creativity, while they mainly mentioned awareness information and communication via the Internet. The words used to describe “creativity with new technologies in school” were related to their school experiences. Playing online games and participating in social media have been identified both as creative and noncreative activities. The cultivation of creativity with ICT in school education is suggested. Further research is needed onto how creativity can be supported and developed through ICT in contemporary classrooms.
