Abstract
Feeding problems can occur in 25% to 45% of typically developing children and in up to 80% of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (Manikam & Perman, 2000). The etiology of feeding disorders often involve interactions between physiological, medical, oral-motor, and environmental factors (Rommel, DeMeyer, Feenstra, & Veereman-Wauters, 2003). Therefore, an interdisciplinary approach to assessment, diagnosis, and treatment is necessary. An interdisciplinary team is able to identify when feeding difficulties are severe enough to warrant diagnosis and treatment. Given the complex etiology of feeding disorders, practitioners should work closely with the interdisciplinary team throughout treatment to ensure the child’s safety. . This chapter summarizes the prevalence and etiology of pediatric feeding disorders, strategies to identify the events or conditions that cause or lead to feeding difficulties, and empirically supported assessment tools to indicate which treatment will be most effective and necessary to treat feeding disorders.
