Abstract

Communication refers to the ability to convey and/or understand ideas, information, or beliefs through either verbal or nonverbal expression. Additionally, communication occurs between individuals or within a group or community. Communication disorders, which are relatively common in childhood, are characterized by difficulties in meeting expected communicative demands due to difficulties in the production of speech or language. Additionally, these difficulties may subsequently have a negative impact on a child’s social and academic functioning and can lead to a number of undesirable outcomes (e.g., anxiety, low self-esteem) if untreated. Appropriate and accurate assessment of these communication difficulties, therefore, is imperative. Currently, there are a number of assessment methods including rating scales or checklists, semi-structured interviews, and screening instruments that are designed to assess the presence and characteristics of different communication difficulties and can assist in the diagnosis of communication disorders. This chapter discusses and reviews several of these methods for assessing communication skills and disorders including supporting psychometric evidence.
