Abstract

Social excesses and deficits are commonly reported problems of childhood. A variety of methods have been developed to assess these behaviors from observing and counting or rating targeted social behaviors such as eye contact and voice volume. A number of psychometrically sound assessment instruments for children are available. The various means of evaluating social skills of children in various contexts such as the home and school will be covered. Particular focus will be placed on paper and pencil tests, role-play assessments, and direct observation.
