Abstract

Anterior cervical corpectomies are used in cases of ventral cord compression that cannot be addressed with a standard anterior cervical discectomy or posterior cervical laminectomy or laminoplasty. Although relatively uncommon, several pathologies render this a useful surgical technique for severe spondylotic myelopathy, infection, and ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament. Anterior cervical corpectomy aims to treat spinal canal stenosis. Adequate imaging is necessary for proper preoperative workup and surgical planning. The goal of surgery is to provide adequate decompression, stabilization, maintenance of cervical alignment, and arthrodesis. Careful surgical technique is essential for adequate decompression and avoidance of complications. The illustrations provided identify the relevant anatomy and important surgical steps that will help perform an anterior cervical corpectomy safely.
