Embodiment in Psychotherapy

Abstract

In this chapter, we provide an overview how emotion regulation is related to embodiment, the individual experience shaped by the state of the body and its mental representation. Firstly, we summarize the main concepts of emotion regulation, and the relation between emotion processing and interoception, i.e. the perception of the internal bodily cues. Secondly, we introduce two models of emotion regulation, the process model of Gross and the hierarchical neuro-cognitive model of Smith and Lane. Lastly, interoceptive abilities are discussed in the context of emotion regulation, and some clinical guidelines are provided.
