Diversity and Inclusion in Quality Patient Care

Abstract

Transgender or gender nonconforming individuals are a vulnerable population in systems which rely on binary male/female sex identifiers. In the healthcare setting, patients can be unwittingly exposed to discrimination when certain registration systems and electronic health records are used. Using a case example, we explore the implications of a staff member’s misidentification of a patient and discuss the importance of proper registration, gender affirmation, and the cascading effects of a sex-designated system within an electronic medical record.
