Pediatric Invasive Fungal Infections

Abstract

Invasive fungal infections are increasing in incidence and constitute an important cause for morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised pediatric patient populations, including but not limited to preterm neonates, critically ill children and adolescents in the intensive care unit and those with hematological malignancies or undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Infections in these patients are due to Candida, Aspergillus, and other less common opportunistic fungi. While children and adolescents are similarly vulnerable to invasive fungal infections, important differences exist relative to adults. This chapter reviews current epidemiology of invasive fungal infections in pediatric patients, new emerging diagnostic modalities and current concepts for treatment and prevention.
