Introduction to Clinical Infectious Diseases

Abstract

Fungal pneumonia is a rare but often serious infective process that may complicate or be indicative of an underlying immune deficiency. Molds and dimorphic fungi can both cause pulmonary disease, while yeast is nearly always a commensal organism. Efforts to identify and treat the specific fungal pathogen can be a difficult process that involves all facets of clinical medicine. Treatment is targeted to the suspected or proven pathogen, and newer antifungal agents such as the broad-spectrum triazoles and the echinocandins provide better tolerated alternatives to the traditional amphotericin B, although with narrower spectrums of activity.
