Abstract
Millions of adolescents are currently living with the effects of abuse and neglect. This leaves them vulnerable to significant health, emotional, and behavioral impacts. Systems have arisen around this need, but they have often pathologized or blamed youth, retraumatized victims, and failed to consider the impact of maltreatment on the whole person. The tide is turning. Systems and those who function within them have a growing understanding of trauma and its effects on the whole person, as well as the importance of empowering adolescents in their own healing and avoiding retraumatization. This chapter explores adolescent maltreatment and the ways it impacts those who have been targeted. It describes encouraging developments that are springing from an enhanced understanding of trauma-informed practice, resilience, and hope. It examines implications for policy and practice and presents a framework for integrating mental health and healthcare responses to better support adolescents who have experienced maltreatment as they continue their journey toward healing.
