Poly-victimization: The Co-occurrence of Intimate Partner Violence with Other Forms of Aggression

Abstract

While various forms of violence have historically been researched independently, a growing body of literature suggests the same person may experience more than one form of violence either simultaneously or serially as opposed to in isolation. This chapter examines the co-occurrence of intimate partner violence (IPV) with other forms of interpersonal violence, including childhood physical assault (CPA), childhood sexual assault (CSA), witnessing violence as a child, and adult sexual assault (ASA). The rates of poly-victimization pertaining to the various forms of violence are discussed. Proposed pathways to poly-victimization and predictors of victimization are also reviewed. Finally, outcomes associated with poly-victimization, including psychological and physical outcomes, are addressed, and implications pertaining to psychological theory, research, and clinical practice are discussed.
