Abstract
Patients present to emergency departments with eye complaints frequently, accounting for approximately 1–2% of all ED visits. Eye emergencies can be separated into three categories: the red eye, the painful eye, and those with associated vision loss. This chapter will focus mainly on eye infections and the most common disorders emergency physicians should consider, diagnose, and rapidly treat upon their presentation. This chapter will discuss the presentation, signs and symptoms, evaluation, treatment, and disposition for periorbital and orbital cellulitis, bacterial, viral and neonatal conjunctivitis, complications related to contact lens use, herpes simplex virus (HSV) keratoconjunctivitis, herpes zoster ophthalmicus, corneal ulcers, bacterial and fungal keratitis, uveitis, iritis, and endophthalmitis.
