Abstract

The importance of football for the Federal Republic of Germany goes beyond the outstanding track record of its national team. Both the Nationalmannschaft and the Bundesliga have for decades played the roles of symbols that are constitutive of German cultural identity. Recalling football’s introduction by bourgeois anglophiles, its subsequent development into a popular game, its (failed) instrumentalisation in the Third Reich, and its rather late professionalisation process, Albrecht Sonntag also reminds us that between 1952 and 1990, there were two German football federations, each contributing to post-war nation-building on their respective side of the Iron Curtain. Citing recent research findings, the article puts into perspective the narratives woven around the “Miracle of Berne” and the re-definition of reunified Germany through the 2006 World Cup “fairy tale” and the expression of its long-denied ethnic and cultural diversity in the current national team. Sonntag concludes with reflexions on contemporary challenges of German football, such as the dialogue with supporters, the evolution of its 50 + 1 club management model, and the development a holistic corporate social responsibility strategy.
