Abstract
Intervertebral disc disease is a common condition affecting many patients. Intervertebral disc disease is a broad term that describes a spectrum from the asymptomatic disc bulge to advanced degenerative disc disease. Intervertebral disc disease occurs most commonly in the cervical and lumbar spine, but can also occur in the thoracic spine. An understanding of the basic science, anatomy, and pathophysiology of the intervertebral disc helps one grasp why disc herniation occurs and how it produces clinical symptoms.
