Anesthesia for Kidney Transplantation

Abstract

Renal transplantation is currently the most common type of transplant surgery performed in the United States, with a total of 19,060 cases completed in the year 2016 (Transplant Trends, UNOS, 2017). Concurrent with the increased surgical transplant volume, 2015 data indicate ongoing positive trends in patient morbidity and mortality for both deceased and living donor renal transplantations (OPTN/SRTR 2015 Annual Data Report, 2016). Improvements in perioperative care for this unique population, as well as advances in pharmacology and technology, have resulted in increasing numbers of transplants performed and greater complexity of cases seen in the operating room. Anesthesiologists participating in these cases are an integral part of the team caring for renal transplant patients throughout the perioperative period. As such, it is essential to understand the pathophysiology of end stage renal disease (ESRD), have in-depth knowledge of current and new surgical techniques, and be cognizant of the intraoperative challenges specific to renal transplantation.
