Abstract
Lung ultrasound is increasingly recognized as a critical element of bedside sonography [1]. The pleura is generally very well-visualized as a bright white (hyperechoic) horizontal line just deep to the ribs. Pleural ultrasound is used widely for the diagnosis of pneumothorax and pleural effusion, and new studies demonstrate its utility for the evaluation of suspected pneumonia [2–5]. The images in Figs. 14.1, 14.2, 14.3, 14.4, 14.5, 14.6, 14.7, 14.8, 14.9, and 14.10 demonstrate these diagnoses, as well as depictions of basic scanning technique and normal ultrasonographic lung anatomy.
