Abstract

This chapter describes the postoperative outcomes of laparoscopic ventral incisional hernia repair (LVIHR). These postoperative outcomes for purposes of convenience have been divided into early and late. Early outcomes comprise iatrogenic enterotomy (IE), early postoperative pain, and seroma. Late postoperative outcomes include recurrence, chronic pain, mesh infection, small bowel obstruction, trocar site hernia, and quality of life assessment. Traditionally, recurrence has been considered the primary outcome measure after hernia repair. However, postoperative pain and quality of life assessment are now considered equally important measures of surgical outcomes. Constant monitoring and evaluation of clinical outcomes of surgery provide the best means to improve upon surgical audit and results.
