Echocardiography

Abstract

Although limited in number, pericardial disorders are clinically important in that they may mimic other disorders and may have life-threatening effects. Effective treatments are typically available if the diagnosis is made. Echocardiography remains a vitally important part of the bedside evaluation for pericardial disease and associated hemodynamic effects. The most frequently encountered and important pericardial disorders are pericardial effusion and tamponade, constrictive pericarditis, and acute pericarditis. Less common pericardial disorders include congenital absence of the pericardium, pericardial cysts, and pericardial tumors.
