Abstract

The purpose of this book chapter is to examine and describe the current knowledge on sleep and exercise with exposure to hot environmental temperatures. This chapter will also explore the influence of sleep on performance and safety during physical activity in the heat. More specifically, it will discuss the physiology of sleep, implications of sleep on athletic performance and athlete health, environmental influence on sleep quality, and sleep strategies to improve subsequent performance in the heat. Such information is important in order to educate those groups who are exposed to work in hot conditions, including athletes, soldiers, and laborers.
