Abstract

The global burden and the treatment gap for mental health is a human rights public health issue, which the Internet potentially has a role in addressing. The Internet is a source of data on mental health for policymakers, a resource for researchers and clinicians, and a means to provide treatment to those who otherwise have no access. By using web-based tools from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluations detailed data on the global burden of disease is available. The World Health Organization mental health website is a resource to obtain country-specific data on mental health services, policies, plans, legislation, financing, care delivery, human resources, medicines, and information systems. The mhGAP program is an ongoing initiative to bridge the treatment gap by scaling up mental health care through training physicians and other health-care providers in identifying and managing mental disorders. The Internet has numerous resources on training and implementation of mental health and psychosocial support. Web-based interventions for mental disorders hold promise in LIMCs but are limited and are in need of randomized controlled trials.
