Abstract

Restoration and preservation of hemodynamic stability is one of the key targets in critically ill patients. In the last decades, various methods of hemodynamic monitoring have been developed to better understand acute disturbances in macrohemodynamics ranging from very invasive to completely noninvasive procedures. There is no doubt that invasive techniques have proved their validity. However, less or even minimal-invasive devices are now available providing multiple hemodynamic variables besides the monitoring of cardiac output. This chapter focuses on the historical development of hemodynamic monitoring devices and weighs up advantages and disadvantages of the currently available methods in daily clinical use.
