Lung Disease in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Part of the book series: Respiratory Medicine ((RM))

Abstract

Pulmonary complications are common extra-articular manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis and include interstitial lung disease, airway disease, pulmonary nodules, pleural disease and pulmonary vasculopathy. Furthermore, several therapeutic agents frequently prescribed in these patients may result in pulmonary toxicity. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) permits ready identification of a variety of pulmonary diseases and is the imaging modality of choice for evaluating the lung in rheumatoid arthritis. In the setting of rheumatoid-related interstitial lung disease, HRCT may also play a prognostic role. In this chapter, the role of imaging in the diagnosis and management of patients with rheumatoid-related lung disease will be discussed.
