Definition

Clipperton Island (in French: Île de la Passion) is an uninhabited low coral lagoon located in the eastern Pacific Ocean off the coast of Mexico and the tip of Baja California. The island has played a significant geopolitical role as it has been subject to a sovereignty dispute between Mexico and France which was resolved in 1931 through arbitration (Delgado 2019).

Inter Caetera was a bull issued by Pope Alexander VI in 1493 with the goal to impose European Christian principles of legal order on the Ocean and the newly (re-)discovered lands and islands West of the Atlantic. The text became the chief justification for the conquest of the new world by the Portuguese and Spaniards (MacMillan 2004).
