Abstract

The two most common disorders of the first metatarsal-phalangeal joint are hallux valgus and hallux rigidus. Non-operatively, these can be treated with shoe modifications, shoe inserts, and cortisone injections for hallux rigidus. For patients with recalcitrant symptoms, surgical intervention may include joint debridement, reconstruction, or arthrodesis. In the midfoot, arthritis may similarly be treated with shoe inserts and cortisone injections, with the latter ideally being performed under image guidance. Thereafter, patients with persistent pain may be candidates for joint debridement or arthrodesis.
