Abstract

The diagnosis and treatment of articular cartilage defects can be a challenging task for the treating physician. In most instances a thorough trial of nonoperative conservative treatment strategies should be employed before considering surgical interventions. In cases where surgical treatment is necessary, algorithms based on the lesion location, size, and status of the subchondral bone should all be considered when choosing the most appropriate technique.
