1 Introduction
The metal working industry comprises a wide variety of activities resulting in relevant differences concerning work circumstances and environments and thus skin hazards. Most problems are caused by wet work although dry work can be skin damaging as well. Wet work involves contact with metalworking fluids (MWF) like cutting fluids, neat oil, water, and other lubricants. These contacts have become less frequent and intensive because many tooling operations have been computerized. However, still a lot of work is done by hand (Berndt and Elsner 2006).
2 Epidemiology
Metalworkers carry a high risk of developing contact dermatitis. Epidemiological data are scarce. In 1990, a register for occupational skin disease (OSD) was established in Northern Bavaria (Dickel et al. 2001a).
