Psychology of Career Adaptability, Employability and Resilience

Abstract

Career counselors are tasked with preparing young adults as they transition into the world of work and construct careers in a global, technological era. Newer career counseling strategies that emphasize career adaptability and resiliency are critical in this unstable, insecure socioeconomic and political climate. Furthermore, counselors must help young adults manage their expectations and anxiety due to the super saturation of information, career possibilities, and lifestyles they are exposed to due to the social media. In accordance with Career construction theory (2005), this chapter outlines four specific career adaptability domains: concern, control, curiosity, and confidence and how counselors can use narrative techniques to help clients develop the necessary attitudes, beliefs, and competencies for successful transitioning.
