Abstract
Presacral bleeding is a potentially life-threatening, though uncommon, complication that colorectal surgeons may encounter during posterior rectal dissection. The reported mortality is as high as 4.3%, with an incidence of 9.4%. Incorrect mobilization of the rectum between the fascia propria of the rectum and presacral fascia can tear the presacral venous plexus, resulting in uncontrollable bleeding. Here we describe an algorithmic approach to common and practical measures for presacral hemorrhage control.
