Fundamentals of Pain Medicine

Abstract

Surgical pain is a very complicated subject as it arises from both tissue damage and nerve injury. The proper management of surgical pain is crucial not only for better outcomes in the perioperative period, but for long-term benefit by reducing chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) with its dire effects on patient’s outcomes. Aggressive multimodal analgesic treatment could be helpful to minimize the risks of development of CPSP in addition to the prevention of nerve and tissue damage during surgery.
