Abstract

The article will focus on the para-religious organisation Zoe, an organisation that was founded as early as 1907 as a semi-monastic brotherhood by Archimandrite Efsevios Matthopoulos that initially consisted of celibate lay theologians and some professionals. Its purpose was not an otherworldly retreat from the concerns of everyday life, but a serious attempt to deal with Greeceā€™s grave problems, religious and social alike. Its basic aims were the spiritual and moral improvement of its members and followers as well as the wholesale re-Christianisation of the country. The aim of the chapter is to describe its purposes, structure, and ideology, and the rise and fall of a powerful organisation that left deep traces in Greece up to the present day.
