Abstract
The article will focus on the para-religious organisation Zoe, an organisation that was founded as early as 1907 as a semi-monastic brotherhood by Archimandrite Efsevios Matthopoulos that initially consisted of celibate lay theologians and some professionals. Its purpose was not an otherworldly retreat from the concerns of everyday life, but a serious attempt to deal with Greeceās grave problems, religious and social alike. Its basic aims were the spiritual and moral improvement of its members and followers as well as the wholesale re-Christianisation of the country. The aim of the chapter is to describe its purposes, structure, and ideology, and the rise and fall of a powerful organisation that left deep traces in Greece up to the present day.
