Abstract
In this chapter you can find an overview of the alpine ski injuries in general population and in top athletes of different countries; differences between the two groups, identification of risk factors and mechanism of injury are analysed. We will show epidemiology in both sex, body district involved and trauma mechanisms, we highlight changes in injury numbers during last 30 years; this can be important to understand why the incidence of injuries from the 1970s to the present day significantly reduced and to learn the role that changes in safety regulations, preparation of the slopes, technical capacity of practitioners and evolution of the equipment had had in this trend. We will find that the knee is involved in more or less 50% of total alpine ski injuries. That’s the reason why lower leg biomechanics is the most studied by physiologist, orthopaedics, sports physician, physiotherapist and athletic trainers that work in alpine ski in order to define injury prevention strategies.
