Abstract
Once the most common indication for gastric surgery, peptic ulcer disease (PUD) now only infrequently requires surgical approach. The development of H2 blockers and proton pump inhibitors over the last several decades and the recognition that treatment for Helicobacter pylori infection can eliminate most ulcer recurrences have essentially eliminated the need for elective surgery. However, complications related to PUD continue to occur and include bleeding, perforation, and gastric outlet obstruction. Good understanding of surgical management remains important since surgery is restricted for emergency cases and refractory disease.
