Percutaneous Treatment of Left Side Cardiac Valves

Abstract

Edge-to-edge repair has been used as a surgical technique in open-chest, arrested heart surgery for the treatment of mitral regurgitation (MR) since the early 1990s. With this technique, a portion of the anterior leaflet is sutured to the corresponding portion of the posterior leaflet, creating a point of permanent approximation of the two leaflets and resulting in a double orifice. Mitral valve repair with the MitraClip™ system (Abbott Vascular, Santa Clara, CA, USA) consists of applying a clip at the site of mitral regurgitation, thereby faithfully reproducing the edge-to-edge surgical technique described by Alfieri. To date, more than 35,000 patients have been treated worldwide.
