Abstract
In 2016, the American Concrete Institute (ACI) published an updated version of the ACI 562 code for the repair of existing concrete structures. The updated code, formally, “ACI 562-16 Code Requirements for Assessment, Repair and Rehabilitation of Existing Concrete Structures and Commentary” (ACI 562-16 (2016)), replaces the first version of the code which was published in 2013. Repair of existing concrete structures results in an estimated $18 to 25 billion dollars (US) in construction spending annually, that is completed without a material specific code for repair. The lack of a concrete repair code has allowed for significant variations in practice and has been identified as a contributing factor in the poor performance of repaired structures. The ACI 562 Committee was created in response to an industry-expressed need to improve concrete repair practice and the performance of repaired concrete structures.
The 2016 version of ACI 562 was updated to reflect feedback from code users, incorporate materials that were not addressed in the 2013 version, and to better integrate the code with US general existing building codes. These changes focused on improving terminology for consistency with ISO and ASCE documents, development of rational demand/capacity ratio limits for evaluation and repair of existing structures, and modifications of the code provisions to reflect feedback from code users.
