Abstract

This paper discusses the Last Supper Interactive (LSI) project, a real-time-immersive interactive storytelling and virtual narrative application in high-definition (3D/4K stereo) that incorporates Virtual Reality (VR) and haptic technology, based on the Last Supper (L’Ultima Cena); a late 15th century mural painting by Leonardo da Vinci located in the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, in Milan, Italy. The LSI can be considered an immersive stereoscopic vision and holistic, multi-sensorial engaging experimental journey into Leonardos’ Last Supper painting, enabling visitors to explore and be virtually transferred inside the picture, enabling them to experience the three-dimensional composition of the painting, move in- and outside in real time from any perspective over the full 360° range, and to explore how linear perspective, was used by Leonardo Da Vinci in the Last Supper. The VR application currently runs on a high resolution 4k stereo visualization display system providing haptic technology and user-driven interactive tools for the virtual access to the artwork. This paper presents an overview of the project, key achievements and recent accomplishments.
