Abstract
In the context of the relationship between heritage and design, we are interested in exploring ways in which the museum tradition can establish, via design practice, a virtuous dialogue with innovation. We, therefore, propose that the established practice of strategic design be applied to cultural institutions as an appropriate process with which to build innovative museum systems. From the starting point of the assumptions that museums perform an important social function and should build empathic relationships with their stakeholders we stress the importance of building a design driven system led by co-curation work capable of involving stakeholders proactively with their various skills. Finally, we will suggest guidelines, a minimum mapping of the main existing communication artifacts and some practical examples of transmedia devices created ad hoc for the achievement of a range of conceptual innovative museum model frameworks. In conclusion the designer’s role as activator of a continuous process of interpretation of phenomena, in the capacity of mediator, with an ability to translate the real world and different languages and achieve concrete artifacts using the most advanced technologies emerges.
