Abstract

The study will give an overview of the definition of public space from the perspectives of the different disciplines in social science, planning and architecture. Defining space and the differentiation between public space and private space is essential to have a good understanding of the boundaries and dimensions of public realm that will be consistently mentioned in this essay. The public spaces that will be given focus and analyzed are the following: streets, squares, plazas, parks, and gardens. A specific discussion will be done on the various roles of public spaces and its significance in the field of sustainable urban development particularly focusing on its main contribution in the architectural character, urban design and spatial planning of cities. It is also important to study the impact of public spaces in the social development and integration of the inhabitants of a city. Likewise, issues and challenges linked to public spaces will be assessed in terms of its design, flexibility of form and versatility of its function.
